ATMs Closing at Night

Bank ATMs may not be available 24 hours a day

While 24-hour ATMs are common in some countries overseas, bank ATMs in Japan may become unavailable at night. It is especially important to note that ATMs located inside bank branches may stop operating in line with business hours or be unavailable late at night.

Although cashless payments are increasing in Japan, there are still many small shops in tourist destinations and rural areas where only cash is accepted. Therefore, to avoid a situation where you cannot use an ATM when you need one, it is a good idea to prepare a certain amount of cash early on for peace of mind.

On the other hand, ATMs installed in convenience stores are relatively easy to use, and since many stores are open 24 hours a day, they are convenient for travelers. It is particularly easy to find ATMs that accept overseas-issued cards at airports, around train stations, and in tourist areas. However, it is best to check in advance, as usage fees may change during late-night hours.

During your trip, it is recommended to prepare cash during the day rather than looking for it when you need it. By planning a little ahead, you will be able to enjoy your stay in Japan more comfortably.
