Although Japan is a world-class tourist destination, it does not mean that English is understood everywhere. In tourist areas such as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, English signage is increasing, and there are many staff members who can handle English at stations, airports, and hotels. However, when it comes to detailed explanations or dealing with trouble, there are many situations where Japanese becomes the central language.

Especially in rural areas, small eateries, and privately owned shops, there may be no English-speaking staff. Furthermore, even if Japanese people understand English, they may hesitate to speak proactively out of modesty, thinking it might be rude if they make a mistake. Consequently, some travelers feel that English is not understood at all, but in reality, there are many cases where people are genuinely trying to help you kindly.

During your trip, keeping a translation app on your smartphone is extremely convenient. Just having simple Japanese phrases or a screen translation function can be a huge help when checking restaurant menus or asking for directions. Also, simply using basic Japanese like "Sumimasen" (Excuse me) or "Arigatou" (Thank you) can make communication go much more smoothly.
