Seasonal Clothing

Japan’s summer feels like a “sauna” because of the humidity, while winter is dry and can feel piercingly cold.

Summer in Japan

Outdoors can be extremely harsh because of the strong sunlight and Japan’s unique high humidity, which makes it feel like a steam bath.
However, once you enter buildings, air conditioning is usually running, which is good.
But there is actually a common trap… the air conditioning is often too strong.
You enter a building sweating from the heat outside, and at first it feels comfortable.
But gradually it starts to feel cold.
In the worst case, you might even catch a cold.
Also, although the daytime is very hot, the temperature can drop quickly early in the morning and at night.
For these reasons, it’s very useful to carry a light jacket that you can easily put on without taking up much space in your bag.
Cooling Fan Jacket
A revolutionary item — wear the wind.
Evaporative cooling makes it even cooler.
Air flows out from the neck and under the arms, keeping you comfortable.

Portable Fan
The recommended types are shoulder-strap or belt-mounted fans.
When traveling, you often need both hands for bags or shopping.
With a belt-mounted fan, directing airflow inside your shirt can make it feel even cooler.

Winter in Japan

Depending on the region, winter temperatures can drop to around 0°C (32°F), making it feel very cold.
One characteristic of Japanese winters is the combination of “dry air” and “wind.”
Because the air is so dry, the temperature can feel colder than it actually is,
and when you are outside, the cold can feel sharp and piercing.

Another thing to be careful about is the temperature difference between outdoors and indoors, just like in summer.
Inside trains, shops, and hotels, the heating is often very strong.
It can be freezing outside, but once you go indoors it may suddenly feel very warm.
If you are wearing too many thick clothes, you may start sweating,
and when you go back outside, your body can become cold again.
Also, sightseeing in Japan often involves walking outdoors for long periods,
so your hands and feet can easily get cold.
A very convenient item in such situations is something called a “Hokkairo,” a disposable pocket warmer.
You can put it in your pocket, or use adhesive types that stick to the inside of your clothes,
making it easy to keep your body warm.
Recently, there are also electric heated gloves and heated vests that work like mobile batteries,
so you can stay comfortable even on very cold days.

For this reason, when traveling in Japan during winter,
it’s recommended not only to bring a thick coat but also clothes that allow you to adjust your temperature easily.
Layering items such as a light sweater, fleece, or a lightweight down jacket
will help you stay comfortable both outdoors and indoors.
Just preparing a few cold-weather items can make your winter trip in Japan much more comfortable.
