100V. The plug type is Type A (the same as the United States), but 2-pin plugs are the mainstream rather than 3-pin.

The voltage in Japan is 100V, and the mainstream outlet shape is "Type A". Although it looks similar to those in the United States, 2-pin types are common in Japan, and 3-pin plugs may not be compatible as they are. Therefore, travelers from abroad should prepare a conversion adapter if necessary for peace of mind.

Many electronic devices, such as smartphones and laptops, are compatible with "100V to 240V," so they can mostly be used as is. However, high-wattage home appliances like hair dryers and hair irons may not be compatible with the voltage, and a transformer may be required. Before using, be sure to check the supported voltage written on the product.

Also, an increasing number of hotels are equipped with USB port outlets and internationally compatible plugs, but they are not available at all facilities. In particular, accommodations in rural areas may only have Japanese-standard outlets.

Since it can be troublesome if you cannot charge your smartphone or camera during your trip, checking the voltage and plug shape in advance and preparing the necessary conversion plug will allow you to enjoy your travels with peace of mind.
